Collection 9

Sarah Lancaster of France

Sarah has some more "modern" vintage dolls houses ranking amongst her vintage collection, plus some Tri-angs from the 1950s as well as an unusual cottage. For many of you I know, you will be fascinated by her Caroline's Houses filled with the Barton furniture etc.

KT Miniatures would like to thank Sarah for taking time out to photograph her collection.

The following text is in Sarah's own words.

So this is where it all started ...

Although not strictly vintage, this is where my collection began, so it is important to me.  Whilst browsing eBay one rainy day I spotted some dolls and furniture similar to those I played with as a child and still have stored at my parents' house in England for my daughter when she's older.  I searched further and found a 'job lot' of furniture and a 'Caroline's Home'.

I turned my attention to French eBay and found a house and contents - surprisingly, as they rarely come up - it must have been fate!  I put in a bid and won for a very reasonable price.  I also won the lot of furniture from the UK and I had my first house with quite alot of original Barton & Caroline's Home furniture.

Unfortunately the previous owner of the house had papered the two upstairs bedrooms, but I carefully removed the paper as best I could and its not too damaged !

Here is a picture of the room in my Caroline's Home before, with the wallaper that the previous owner had put in and then again after it was painstakingly removed to reveal the famous 'chicken & horse'.

The next house I received was a Wedding Present!

Super de Luxe Caroline's Home

This is a Super de Luxe Caroline's Home from the 1980s.  It came without any furniture, so I've had lots of fun hunting for things to fill it, and I've allowed a few Lundby items into this house.

All the electrics work and all rooms have lights.  My favourite room is probably the kitchen where Mother is busy ironing! The dolls in this house are the ones produced for Caroline's Home in the 1980's and there is a Lundby boy on the balcony on the tyre swing ! You can also join the family listening to "The Bartons" in the lounge!

Tri-ang No 60 circa 1950s

So after I had completed my Carolines Homes, I was starting to get hooked!  I had spotted some earlier Barton furniture and needed to find a home for it.  I then spotted a Tri-ang No 60 from the 1950s that needed some refurbishment and decided this could become home to Madame Dol-Toi and her visiting grandchildren.

I've included a photo taken when I received it and some of it furnished.  I have found some interesting early Barton items for it, a bureau upstairs and a large cupboard/fridge in the kitchen, which both bear the ink stamps dating them from 1946 to 1948/9.

I have managed to squeeze a bedroom and washbasin in the room above the sunporch and the picture over the fire is a miniature version of one of my ancestral photos taken in 1902.

I've included some Kleeware items in the house and the wallpaper, whilst not vintage, I feel is fitting to the house.  I think my favourite bit is the sunporch area.

Triang No 61 circa 1950s

I recently spotted another Tri-ang, the No 61 which is slightly bigger than the one I had restored.

This one was in pretty good condition, just missing its gables.  These I have replaced and acquired some new windows, to which I have added new curtains.

I have also repapered the floor of the sunporch and the kitchen as they were worn. The previous owner had added a few stickers to the wall as a child but rather than repaper I have hidden these behind furniture so that I could retain the original wallpapers.

I have managed to squeeze a bedroom over the sunporch and a bathroom over the garage so the Dol-Toi dolls have a super little home. The furniture is mainly Barton, there is a Romside metal fire upstairs with a Barton surround and a small F G Taylor stove in the kitchen.

Tri-ang No 62 circa 1950s

This is a really lovely house that I discovered not long ago.  It is in excellent condition, it has all its original wallpaper and windows, just missing one curtain. It has both chimney pots and its front steps.

And the Grecons are very proud of their 1/17th scale 2CV (French registered of course) in the garage! It is furnished with mainly Barton furniture from the 1940s through to the 1960s.

Like the other 1950s wooden Tri-ang houses, this has a 'hidden' section above the garage, and whilst it is tempting to put the bathroom here, I decided to move the rooms around and have the bathroom downstairs next to the kitchen. I had collected a nice pink Barton plaster bathroom suite, including the wooden toilet roll holder, stool and towel rail (so easily lost!) and didn't want to hide it away. The cabinet above the sink and the set of scales on the floor are by Twigg. The fire in bathroom is by F G Taylor & Sons.

The kitchen has some really lovely furniture. There is a fridge by Taylor & Barrett - stamped on the base, so this dates it to pre 1941, as the partnership wasn't renewed after WWII and the firm split and became Barrett & Sons and F G Taylor & Sons. There is a metal stove by Barrett & Sons and the blue kitchen units are by Barton and bear the diamond stamp, dating them to between 1946 and 1948/49. There is also a Barrett & Sons washing machine and a family of cats tucked under the stairs.

The upstairs living room is furnished with Barton furniture from the 1950s, including a Bureau bookcase and Console Television with doors. There is also an unusual Grandfather clock and recent ebay finds of a wooden painted firescreen, metal coal scuttle and a wooden lamp.

The bedroom is furnished with 1950s Barton furniture and the set is in pale green. I made the bedspread myself and you'll see that Mama Grecon has a bit of a shoe fetish ! Miss Grecon is playing on her Barton wooden rocking horse!

Morag's Cottage

Here is another house I have in my collection - I'm not sure of the age of it, it was described as 'built a long time ago' when I purchased it.  I immediately fell in love with it and its definately handmade.  I have called it 'Morag's Cottage'.

It has a resident witch and she has her familiar on the bed (Bartons !).  She has various spell books, bottles and potions ready for casting her spells and a mini ouija board and some tarot cards !
